The 5th workshop on LiDAR application in forest ecology was held by the Institute of Botany, the Chinese Academy of Science (IB-CAS), from June 2nd to 6th, 2019. More than 300 students from 100 organizations participated in this workshop. Guo Qinghua, professor of IB-CAS hosted the opening ceremony.
On June 3rd, Tang Shouzheng the Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences， and Chen Jingming the Fellow of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada，and other professors and researchers gave a series of insightful lectures on the applications of LiDAR and the progress of hardware development. Following the lectures, the speakers also had discussions with students of the workshop. On June 4th and 5th, the practical training of lidar technology application, including the basic theory of lidar, data processing methods, forestry parameter extraction, Python programming and so on, was conducted by scientific and technological personnel from the Digital Ecosystem Research Group.
The workshop is a combination of lectures and practical operations, focusing on feedback and interaction. The students said that they had gained a lot in the training process, mastered the principle of LIDAR and related research methods and applications, which would help them to solve many technical problems encountered in scientific research practice and expand ideas and research means for future academic research. This workshop has achieved the desired results.
